A riverside walk between Týn nad Vltavou and Koloděje nad Lužnicí: 10 km to 15 km

  • The river Lužnice is one of the Czech Republic’s most important and scenic rivers. It flows for over 200 km from just inside Austria through the UNESCO protected landscape of Třebonsko to join with the Vltava river at Týn nad Vltavou, some 26 km north of České Budějovice.
  • This easy walk follows the Vltava riverbank from Týn to reach the confluence point with the Lužnice. The route then follows the Lužnice for its last 5 km as far as the bridge at Koloděje nad Lužnicí.
  • Koloděje is the home of one of the country’s most beautiful Renaissance chateaux, Mitrovicz castle. The castle is currently (2023) undergoing refurbishment and will hopefully reopen in the near future.
  • Týn nad Vltavou can be reached easily by bus and there are various free parking areas around the historic town centre. If driving, it is possible to park at the Semenec viewing tower, 2 km out of town (map point 2), which shortens the circular route to 10 km.
  • The route is partly on riverside footpaths, which can be muddy after wet weather, but otherwise is on easy terrain. There is around 270m of height to ascend-descend over the course of the 15 km route (some of which is avoidable by parking at Semenec). There are a number of restaurant and café options for refreshment in Týn town center.

Directions

  • If starting at the Týn nad Vltavou bus station take the RED trail in the direction of Semenec, reaching the main town square after 700m
  • From the town square, continue on the RED trail for a further 1.7 km to reach the viewing tower at Semenec
  • At Semenec, join the YELLOW trail, heading in the direction of U Masáka, which is reached in 1 km
  • At U Masáka, there is an optional (but recommended) diversion of 500m to reach the confluence point. Return back to U Masáka after this diversion
  • From U Masáka, continue on the YELLOW trail which follows thew Lužnice river for 2.9 km to reach the trail junction Nad Překvapením
  • At Nad Překvapením, turn onto the RED trail and follow this for 1.4 km to reach the bridge at Koloděje nad Lužnicí
  • From Koloděje, return back to Nad Překvapením on the RED trail. From there, continue on the RED trail directly back to Semenec and then Týn
