A visit to Sobotín chateau, with an extension to see Maršíkov church: 2 km to 10 km
- Sobotín chateau is part of the well known Sobotín luxury spa and resort complex, located at the edge of the Jeseníky mountains. The chateau was originally constructed in the mid-19th century by the Kleins, a successful Austrian industrialist family, from the former ironworks in the village.
- The Kleins also established the very attractive English-style park, which is today freely accessible to the general public. It is well worth a visit. The exterior (and interior) of the chateau has been beautifully restored.
- It is not a large park, so if wanting a slightly longer walk while in the area, consider taking the footpath from the chateau to the next village, Marsíkov, to see the Church of St. Michael, the oldest piece of preserved folk architecture in north Moravia. Dating from 1609, this is a unique example of a timbered-framed Renaissance period building.
- The direct route from Sobotín chateau to the church in Marsíkov is around 2 km, but the full trip can be extended to up to 10 km by taking some of the marked trails on the appropriately named Kamenitý kopec (rocky hill). These are attractive forest trails amongst unusual rock outcrops – the paths include an education trail discussing the minerals found in these hills.
- The direct ‘there and back’ route to Sobotín and Marsíkov, if starting and finishing at Sobotín train station is around 7 km with 150m of height to ascend-descend, none of which is difficult. This is the route shown in the map below. Some of the trails on Kamenitý kopec are quite steep if extending the walk in this direction. For refreshments, the café in the Sobotín resort usually is open to the general public.
