A circuit in the countryside to the west of the royal town of Slaný: 18 km (extendable)
- The ancient settlement of Slaný lies approximately 25 km to the northwest of Prague. In medieval times, the town became important due to its location on the trade route between Prague and Saxony. It was given a royal charter by King Václav II at the end of the 13th century. However, the settlement dates from much earlier times. To discover quite how much earlier, visitors to this attractive medieval town would be well advised to spend a little extra time exploring Slánská hora, just to the east of the town center.
- For a good walk in the attractive countryside near Slaný, consider the following itinerary, which can of course be combined with the Slánská hora trail to make an excellent long walk. There are multiple good refreshment options when back in Slaný, as noted below.
- Slaný can be reached directly train from Prague and the suggested itinerary starts and finishes from the train station. If driving, there are various parking areas in the vicinity of the station. The route can be taken either clockwise or anticlockwise.
- The trail passes through a number of villages to the west of Slaný, some of which have some interesting folk architecture. A highlight of the trip is the remarkable wooden bell tower in the village of Neprobylice, with its three bells, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. On the east wall are two Renaissance tombstones of Pětipeský family members. The Pětipeský family owned the village in the 16th and early 17th centuries.
- The 18 km walk involves less than 200m of climbing and is mostly on country roads, so should be manageable with a stroller. It can be extended by up to 3 km with a further exploration of the old town and Slánská hora. In addition to the refreshment spots mentioned in the Slánská hora walk, try the two establishments marked on the map below: the excellent Tovarna Pivovar brewery restaurant (map point 7) or the Hugo Bagel Cafe (map point 6). Both are Hejlík recommendations.
