*Along the Roklanský stream from Modrava (with visit to Tříjezerní slať): 5 km to 11 km*

  • The scenic Roklanský stream is sourced in the highest Šumava hills in the border area with Germany. It flows in a circuitous route, finally joining the Vydra river in Modrava. On the approach to Modrava the stream flows through a lovely broad and sunny valley lined with spruce copses. This once was once a summer hunting and fishing territory for the last of the hunter-gatherers, some 10,000 years ago.
  • Today, where our Mesolithic ancestors once trod, the route along the stream is a popular walking and cycling path. Most people just stroll beside the stream for a couple of kilometers and then head back to Modrava, possibly to enjoy some refreshments on the terrace at the very popular Lyer brewery restraurant.
  • However, it is definitely worth extending the trip to take a loop into the hills to the north of the stream and visit one of Šumava’s famous peat bog lakes, Tříjezerní slať. The upland peat bogs are home to a large number or rare and protected plant species. There is a short nature trail (250m) on a wooden walkway that leads to the small lakes.
  • The suggested 11 km route loops in the hills and then returns back along the stream, passing the archaeological Mesolithic settlement site. It is entirely on mountain roads and can be accessed with a stroller. There is 100m of height to ascend/descend, all in one short but initially quite steep section. There are several refreshment options in Modrava, in addition to the brewery restaurant (which is highly recommended). There are no refreshment options on the route itself.
