An easy walk from Nový Jičín to the Baroque chateau at Kunín – 7 km

  • Kunín chateau is a Baroque jewel in the tranquil Poodří landscape and definitely worth visiting when touring the Moravian-Silesia region. The chateau was built in the early 18th century for the Counts of Harrach by the famous Viennese architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt (who designed the Belvedere chateau in Vienna).
  • Kunín’s most notable owner was Countess Marie Walburga of Truchsess-Waldburg-Zeil who turned the chateau into a school at the end of the 18th century. It became one of the most modern educational establishments in Central Europe at that time. The chateau’s most famous pupil was ‘Father of the Czech nation’, František Palacký. The splendid Baroque interiors and school rooms may be visited on a guided tour (closed in the winter months).
  • For those just wanting a short visit to the chateau and a (maximum 1 km) walk around the adjoining small English-style park, there are parking areas near the chateau as well as bus connections with the nearby town of Nový Jičín. However, for a slightly longer walk, start in Nový Jičín and take the 6 km section of the Novojičínská kopretina nature trail along the Jičinka stream, following side roads, to reach Kunín. Then catch one of the frequent buses back to Nový Jičín.
  • This section of nature trail can be managed with a stroller as it is fully paved and completely flat. The trail passes through the village of Šenov u Nového Jičína where there is the excellent Mc Limon restaurant. The chateau also has a restaurant, and also offers accommodation.
  • If starting in Nový Jičín, do take the time to do a short (2 km) walk around this splendid Renaissance-Baroque town, with its unusual Renaissance chateau built by Žerotín family in the 16th century. Details of this short walk are found here.
