A walk from Neznašov village to the Vltava and Lužnice river confluence viewpoints: 5 km

  • The river Lužnice is one of the Czech Republic’s most important and scenic rivers. It flows for over 200 km from just inside Austria through the UNESCO protected landscape of Třebonsko to join with the Vltava river at Týn nad Vltavou, some 26 km north of České Budějovice.
  • There are a couple of nice ways to view the merging of the two famous rivers. One (10 km to 15 km) walk starts at Týn nad Vltavou and then continues for a section along the Lužnice. A shorter option – described below – is to follow the 5 km educational trail which tours the countryside around the village Neznašov village, on the south (left) bank of the Vltava. The route circles around some fine viewpoints of the merger of the two rivers.
  • Starting in the village center (there are buses here from nearby Týn) the trail heads towards the village cemetery (where there is also a parking area). On the hill behind the cemetery is the neo-Baroque tomb of the Berchtold family (who owned the now dilapidated chateau in the center of the village, during the 19th and early 20th centuries).
  • The trail circles a promontory overlooking the Vltava river, close to the confluence of the two rivers, before heading back into the village. The second half of the loop heads into the low hills behind the village, passing below a Bronze Age hill fort, which presumably was constructed to control the trade along the Vltava, some 4000 years ago. The impressive ramparts are still visible, but now hidden in the surrounding forest.
  • The full 4.8 km loop is mostly on easy footpaths (although the trail around the promontory is narrow in places and could be dangerous if conditions are icy). In the village center is a well regarded pub for refreshments.

Directions

  • The educational trail follows the GREEN hiking trail in a clockwise loop and can be started from any point. There are a number of information boards (in Czech only, describing the local history and village monuments)
