Exploring Chodsko, the home territory of Czech poet, novelist and priest, J.Š. Baar: 2 km to 10 km

  • One of most famous natives of the attractive region of Chodsko (located in the foothills of Český les in southwest Bohemia) is the poet, novelist and Catholic priest, Jindřich Šimon Baar (1869-1925). Baar wrote mainly about rural life in this traditional and historic borderland. Baar’s hometown was Klenčí pod Čerchovem, where his family house is now a museum (usually only open in the summer months).
  • Three kilometers to the south of Klenčí a massive monument dedicated to Baar was constructed in 1933 (map point 2). There is a nice viewpoint close by, with views back towards Domažlice, at the heart of the Chodsko region.
  • One kilometer to the west of the Baar monument, the pretty hamlet of Capartice nestles within an open meadow area. Capartice was a glass-making settlement in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today, the meadow serves as a small cross country ski area in winter and for the rest of the year is home to a short but attractive 2 km nature trail, equipped with information boards.
  • If walking from Klenčí to the meadow and back again, it is a 10 km route, with around 280m of height to ascend and descend, mostly on forest and meadow footpaths. It is possible to catch the bus back to Klenčí from Capartice, saving over 4 km of walking on the same paths as used for the outbound route. For those preferring just a short stroll around the meadow and quick visits to the Baar monument and museum, there are also car parks at both the Baar monument and in Caparatice.
  • For refreshments, there is a snack bar near the chapel in Capartice – usually only open at weekends – and a well regarded café in Klenčí, near the museum.
