A visit to the Open-air folk museum and walk around Bystřice nad Pernštejnem: 5 km to 7 km

  • The Eden Centre is a popular tourist attraction near the Vysočina town of Bystřice nad Pernštejnem. The focus of the Centre is to showcase the folk traditions and lifestyle in the region during the 19th century. Families with children particularly enjoy the opportunity to feed the many animals. It worthwhile extending the trip with a short walk around the historic town whose center is dominated by the impressive Baroque Church of St. Lawrence.
  • Bystřice nad Pernštejnem is perhaps best known today for its difficult 20th century history after uranium deposits were discovered in the region and there was a huge influx of workers. The resulting rapidly constructed ‘panel houses’ built in the 1950’s remain controversial in many parts of the country, including in Bystřice. The Rožná I uranium mine, situated 8 km southwest of Bystřice was finally closed in 2017. It was the last operational uranium mine in Central Europe.
  • The Eden Center is located next to the Bystřice main line train station and it is a 2 km walk from there into the historic center of town. The walk into town passes through the Fairy Tale Avenue, with its well done wooden statues and then past an excellent park area with miniature replica Moravian castles and monasteries. It is possible to circle through town and then back to the train station along a footpath which passes the town’s airfield.
  • For refreshments, there are a couple of options at the Eden Center and in the town center, try Kavárna Franqueza (map point 4). On the opposite side of the square from the Kavarna there is a popular ice cream stall. This short walk can be managed with a stroller. It is not completely flat; there is 100m of descent (and reascent) on the path to/from the town center.
