Six Brdy 800m peaks (Praha, Paterák, Koruna, Brdce, Hradiště, Malý Tok) on a single 25 km loop

  • There are ten named peaks that exceed 800m in altitude in the wild Brdy highland area. It has recently become quite a popular challenge to ‘capture’ (or ‘bag’) all of the peaks in a single walking season. For those wanting to kick start the challenge by visiting six of the ten peaks in one easy day trip, this is the walk for you!
  • The route described below starts in the village of Nepomuk, located a few kilometers southwest of Přibram. There are parking areas at the end of the village, near where the blue hiking trail heads into the forest. Nepumuk is also on a bus line from Rožmitál pod Třemšínem.
  • Probably the best seasons for a visit are autumn, when the larch trees turn golden, and winter when the wide tracks often have hard-packed snow. None of the slopes on this walk are steep, so all the summits can be reached even when there is light snow cover.
  • The suggested route first visits Praha (862m), the second highest peak in the Brdy highlands. Unlike the slightly higher Tok, there are two viewpoints near the summit offering extensive views to the south and west. The more open views are partly due to extensive forestry operations at this end of the Brdy range, which can leave the landscape looking bleak at times.
  • From Praha, the route visits Paterák (814m), which has only limited views from its summit and then descends to the Tři Trubky clearing before ascending the dual peaked hill of Koruna (there is a marked path only to the western, slightly lower summit at 832m). From Koruna, the route leaves marked hiking paths to reach the Brdce (839m) and then Hradiště (841m) peaks.
  • Hradiště peak is interesting in that the summit area has a ‘boulder sea’, which creates the appearance of a broken hillfort wall (and may have given rise to the peak’s name) but the boulders are likely naturally created through frost action. The last peak visited is Malý Tok (843m) which is covered in dense spruce forest, but there is a viewpoint on the south side of the peak.
  • The total route (including optional visits to all the viewpoints and diversions to all six summits) is 25.9 km long on a mix of asphalt road and wide forest tracks (which can be muddy) but are not steep. There is 670m of height to to ascend-descend on the route.
  • There are no refreshment options on the trail itself but there is picturesque spot for a picnic, next to the small pond near the Bor trail junction (map point 10). Back in Nepumuk, there is a pleasant small pub near the parking areas, called the Cykloklub Brdy Nepál.

Directions

  • Note: most of the summits and viewpoints on this walk are short diversions from the main hiking trails on unmarked footpaths. It is therefore best to follow the route using a good map, or the mapy.cz phone application
  • Start the walk in Nepomuk village and take the BLUE hiking trail towards the hills to reach the U sv. Jana trail junction after 1.2 km. Here, turn onto the YELLOW trail in the direction of Praha peak
  • After 1.3km, the trail turns right and there is a short diversion to the Čák viewpoint. Continue on the YELLOW trail towards the transmitter tower, passing the Praha trail junction and continuing past the transmitter to reach the second viewpoint, close to an abandoned stone building (which was built by the Germans in WWII as a radio station for guiding fighter planes)
  • Return back to the Praha trail junction and turn right onto the YELLOW trail in the direction of Pod Hubertkou
  • Continue on the YELLOW trail for 1.5 km to reach the cycle trail junction Na Rovinách. Continue for a further 400m along the YELLOW trail to reach the unmarked footpath to the summit of Paterák. The summit is reached in 200m
  • Return back to the YELLOW trail and continue for 3.5 km to reach the Tři Trubky junction. Here, turn onto the GREEN trail heading in the direction of Pod Bučinou
  • Continue for 2.9 km to reach the Pod Korunou junction, where the 700m diversion to the west summit of Koruna turns off
  • After visiting Koruna return back to the main trail and continue for 1.2 km to reach the Bor junction (good spot for a picnic by the pond)
  • From Bor, continue 800m on the GREEN trail but where the hiking trail bends sharply to the left, continue straigght on following the unmarked forest road (map point 11)
  • After 1.2 km take the unmarked footpath to the left to reach the Brdce summit in 300m. Return back to the main path
  • Continue on the forest road for 1.9 km and then take the unmarked footpath to reach Hradiště summit in 300m. Return back to the main path
  • Continue for 1.1 km on the forest road, until there is a turn to the right signed Tocká. Take this path and after 600m there are footpths to the right (to Malý Tok summit area) and to the left to the viewpoint
  • Continue on the Tocká path for a further 800m until reaching a trail junction to rejoin the YELLOW hiking trail
  • Turn sharply left onto the YELLOW trail and then join the BLUE trail which returns backs to Nepumuk after 1.5 km
