A winter walk along the Berounka river near Tetín: 6 km to 12 km

  • The Berounka river is especially scenic in its stretch from Beroun towards Karlštejn, with dramatic limestone cliffs framing the meandering river. The left (north) bank of the river has a popular cycle path which can be walked in all seasons (as far as Srbsko). Less well known is that there is also an attractive footpath on the right (south) bank of the river, which follows the course of the railway and passes below the historic village of Tetín.
  • The circular route shown in the map below starting at Beroun train station makes a nice flat 12 km walk, which is good in all seasons, but is particularly scenic in wintertime. For a shorter walk, just take the footpath on the right bank and catch the train back to Beroun from Srbsko train station. This is an easy 6 km on a very pretty path.
  • On the cliff above the footpath is the Church of John of Nepomuk in Tetín village. This is believed to be the original burial site of Saint Ludmila (c.860-921 AD), wife of the Přemyslid dynasty founder Bořivoj I. Ludmila and Bořivoj were the first Christian rulers of Bohemia. Ludmila was believed to have been murdered in Tetín castle, and she was canonized shortly after her death.
  • For refreshments try the popular pub near the station or cross the bridge to visit the Restaurant U Berounky, which has an attractive (summer) terrace overlooking the river.
  • NoteTetín village can be visited on the same trip, but the slopes up from the south bank footpath are quite steep and can be slippery in wintertime. There is even a footpath leading to a small waterfall below the village It is possible to ascend beside the waterfall using a fixed chain – but this is an exposed route only to be attempted in good conditions by experienced scramblers.
