*A short walk around the historical center of the east Bohemian town, Vysoké Mýto: 3 km*
- Vysoké Mýto is one of the oldest and best preserved historical towns in east Bohemia. Despite this, the town rarely seems to appear in tourist guides…which means it is even more worthy of a visit! The town was the 2022 winner of the prestigious nationwide competition: ‘Historic City of the Year‘. The historical center, including its two remaining medieval gates and massive fortification walls can be visited on an unmarked educational trail (with info boards) of around 3 km.
- The town was founded by King Otakar II in the middle of the 13th century on an important trade route between Central Bohemia and Moravia. The quadrangular main square, one of the largest in the country, has many well preserved Renaissance and Baroque buildings. Also on the route are the Gothic Church of Saint Lawrence and the striking Art Nouveau Sokol building, with murals and motifs from the life of the Sokol movement.
- The route is essentially flat and can be easily completed with a stroller. For refreshments, there are various options on the main square, but it is worth diverting for 250m away from the center to visit the excellent café-wine bar Kavárna LaCasa (map point 6).
