Walks to two splendid Vysočina chateaux: Pacov and Kámen – 2 km to 14 km
- If travelling around the lovely Vysočina region, which lies in the center of the country, take moment to stop by and walk aroundtwo lesser known, but quite splendid chateaux. One is in the town of Pacov and the other in the nearby village of Kámen. If travelling by car, there are parking options close to both chateaux. If travelling by public transport, then a convenient access point is the Pacov train station (on a regional line between Tábor a Jihlava), which is situated between the two chateaux.
- Pacov is the grander of the two, due to the Baroque refurbishment when a monastery complex was added in the 18th century. The chateau now houses a museum dedicated to the 18th century Czech poet Antonín Sova.
- Kámen, however, is the prettier and has lovely small park area surrounding the towering medieval walls, which is definitely worth exploring. The castle-chateau is of 14th century origin, but has Baroque additions and was given a neo-Gothic refurbishment in the 19th century. Guided tours are available around the interior.
- The route from the train station to Pacov chateau (2 km) follows a side road, so is navigible with a stroller. The 4.7 km path from the train station to Kámen castle is on pleasant forest and meadow footpaths. Buses run between Pacov chateau and Kámen and the train station if preferring not to walk back on the same trail. The trail is easy but quite hilly and involves over 100m of height to ascend. There are refreshment options in both locations, including a small kiosk at Kámen castle.
