Set out below is a personal selection of particularly fine walks of various lengths from across the country, each offering exceptional variety or visiting a truly special location.
All the walks in the guide are worth doing, but only around 20% of the walks get into the ‘TOP WALK’ category! These walks are identifiable by having their *titles bracketed with stars*.

*A circular route around Říp mountain, starting from Ledčice on the southern side: 18 km*
There are several options for including the iconic 'national mountain' of Říp in a nice countryside walk. The best circular routes begin from villages on the southern side, like Ledčice.

*Walks to the Pilgrimage site in the hills above historic Police nad Metují: 4 km to 8 km*
A forested hill above the historic Broumovsko monastery town of Police nad Metují, is the setting for a famous 19th century pilgrimage site. This is a very scenic round trip.

*Walks along the river Labe from Brandýs nad Labem to meet the Jizera at Káraný: 10 km - 14 km*
Brandýs nad Labem offers a number of scenic riverside walks along the Labe. Try this route upstream to Káraný and then circle back through the forests and meadows on the north bank.

*The pre-WWII Dobrošov fortifications educational trail, starting from Jiráskova chata : 6 km*
The Dobrošov artillery fortress is one of the best preserved of the tunnel-linked WWII border fortifications. In addition to the blockhouses and museum, there are some great views to enjoy.

*Walks to the Velká Deštná viewing tower, including winter options: 4 km to 12 km*
Velká Deštná is the tallest peak in Orlické hory at 1116m and is accessible year round on various scenic trails. The new observation tower on the summit is an iconic east Bohemian monument.

*Winter walks from Modrava, beside the Roklanský and Modravský streams: 5 km to 16 km*
Modrava is a good base in winter not just for cross-country skiing, but also for winter walks. The trails along the Roklanský and Modravský streams are some of the nicest in the region.

*The Pardoubek pond fairytale trail at the spa town of Lázně Bělohrad: 2 km*
A brilliant collection of larger-than-life wooden figures from fairytales and myths line the short trail around the picturesque Pardoubek pond in the spa town of Lázně Bělohrad.

*A varied circuit around the spa area and countryside near Lázně Bělohrad: 8 km*
The east Bohemian spa, Lázně Bělohrad, may lack the grandeur of the west Bohemian spas, but the countryside is equally attractive. There are a couple of nature trails which are worth investigating.

*A visit to the historic town of Hořice (home to one of Bohemia's most famous sweets): 2 km to 7 km*
Hořice is probably best known to Czechs today as the home of the famous 'hořické trubičky'. However, the town has some other claims to fame and is worth exploring, even by those without a sweet tooth!

*A short walk along the Velký Špičák educational trail to a magical Krušné hory viewpoint: 2 km*
One of the best viewpoints in the Krušné hory is the summit of Velký Špičák (965m), easily reached by a short nature trail from a car park near the village of Kovářská.

*A circuit around the UNESCO listed mining area following the 'Jáchymov Hell' nature trail: 10 km*
Jáchymov, a former silver mining town, became notorious for its forced labor camps during the Communist era. A 10 km nature trail educates visitors about its rich history, ecology, and mining legacy.

*A visit to Valeč chateau and park, with an optional extension to Orlík viewpoint: 2 km - 10 km*
Valeč chateau/ park is one of the best kept secrets in west Bohemia. This remarkable Baroque complex is well worth a trip. Extend the walk to visit a volcanic rock viewpoint.

*Vojna prison camp and Příbram's uranium mining area (a walk everyone should do): 12 km to 15 km*
This is not a walk for the faint-hearted. It traverses terrain that saw some of the darkest moments in recent Czech history. But it is definitely worth doing - just do not expect beautiful scenery!

*An extended tour around the mining town Příbram (including the Svatá Hora pilgrimage site): 8 km*
Příbram is (arguably) the country's most important historical mining town. There is a lot to discover on this varied and interesting route around this intriguing place, including some good bistros!

*A long circuit to the very best viewpoints and landmarks in and above Karlovy Vary: 23 km*
This walk attempts to capture all the best viewpoints (and cafés) in the hills ringing Karlovy Vary, in a single day trip! The route includes Goethe's and Diana's towers, Vítkův vrch and Linhart park.

*The Diana lookout and Svatý Linhart deer park trail above Karlovy Vary - 11 km*
This excellent walk first visits the famous Diana lookout tower above Karlovy Vary and then heads into the forest to visit the game reserve, returning via the spectacular Westend villa area.

*A circuit to the historic Goethe viewpoint and tower, above Karlovy Vary - 6 km*
The Goethe lookout tower is a great destination for a short hike uphill from Karlovy Vary. The tower has a fascinating (naming) history, super views and nice café. A perfect short trip!

*A circuit around the Mattoni spa area at Kyselka, near Karlovy Vary: 3 km to 10 km*
The historic spa of Kyselka is the home of the famous Mattoni mineral water. Tour the fascinating spa area (in different stages of renovation) and maybe climb up to Mattoni's lookout tower.

*An easy circular route in the Králický Sněžník nature park, near Sky bridge 721: 14 km*
The Králický Sněžník nature park has many attractive hiking and cycle paths, some of which can be best accessed by using the Dolní Morava resort chair lift. This is one of the easier routes!

*Králický Sněžník (1423m) from Dolní Morava, along the Polish border trail: 24 km*
The climb to the summit of Králický Sněžník is rewarding: super views into Poland and back into the Czech lands and a nice return along the fledgling river Morava, from its source.

*The Králíky military museum and WWII fortification education trail: 6 km (extendable)*
The northeast Bohemian town of Králíky is known for its well preserved, extensive pre-WWII border fortifications. This easy walk explores the museum area to the north of the pretty town center.

*A visit to the Hora Matky Boží pilgrimage site above the east Bohemian town of Králíky: 8 km*
The Baroque complex of Hora Matky Boží is the most important pilgrimage site in east Bohemia. Impressively situated on a hilltop overlooking historic Králíky. It is well worth the hike up!

*The 'Brdy Olympus' education trail, starting at historic Jince: 18 km - 20 km*
This excellent and varied education trail visits the Bronze Age Plešivec hillfort, with its fine viewpoints, as well as touring the Brdy hills around the historic ironworking town of Jince.

*The Betonová hranice WWII fortification trail, starting at Suchý vrch: 12 km*
The Betonová hranice trail near Králíky follows the line of the densest network of pre-WWII border defences in the country. It is a 'must see' for anyone with even a passing interest in 20th century history.

*An easy walk between Letohrad and Tvrz Orlice, at the edge of Orlické hory: 5 km*
If visiting the Orlické hory region, consider a stop in Letohrad to visit the Renaissance town and chateau, then stroll down the road to reach the fine restaurant at the former fortress at Tvrz Orlice.

*A visit to Častolovice to see the Sternberg and Kinský family chateaux: 4 km*
The Sternberg family chateau at Častolovice is a real jewel of East Bohemia. Visit the Renaissance chateau, park and mini zoo and take the short walk also to visit the nearby Empire-style Kinský chateau.

*A short walk to the Suchý vrch viewpoints, at the edge of the Orlické hory: 2 km*
Suchý vrch is a popular spot at the southern edge of the Orlické hory. For a nice short stroll to some excellent viewpoints, try this route and then grab some refreshments in the mountain hut.

*An exceptionally varied route visiting Potštejn and Litice castles, on the edge of Orlické hory: 15 km*
The ruins of Litice and Potštejn castles are two of the most interesting in east Bohemia. This fine circular walk connects the both, along some attractive footpaths and also visits two super restaurants.

* A tour around the sandstone rock formations near Sloup v Čechách: 10 km*
The sandstone rock formation near Sloup is just as interesting as more famous Bohemian sandstone areas. There are a lot of highlights to discover and this is a fine trip.

*A trip to see Panská skála - the most visited geological site in the country: 1 km to 3 km*
Panská skála is a remarkable basalt rock formation, created from a 30 million year old lava flow. Located close to Nový Bor and with easy access, it is a 'must see' site!
