*A short walk to the Suchý vrch viewpoints, at the edge of the Orlické hory: 2 km*

  • The Orlické hory (Eagle mountains) are a mountain range that straddle the Polish-Czech border in northeast Bohemia, with a high point of 1116m (Velká Deštná). The area is known for its winter sports (mostly cross country skiing) but it is an attractive area for visiting year round. The mountain range takes its name from the Orlice river which carves its way through the plain below the hills to join the Labe at Hradec Králové. The plain is dotted with attractive towns that have their origins in Medieval times and are often furnished with romantic castle ruins and spectacular Baroque chateaux. The result is an area which offer a lot of variety for tourists and hikers.
  • At the southern area of the mountain range the Suchý vrch – Buková hora nature park is topped (at 995m) with an enclosed viewing tower constructed in 1932. This is a popular spot for visitors to the region, especially as there is a large free car park at the end of the mountain road and driving up the road ensures there is limited climbing to do when starting a walk in the hills.
  • Although many visitors are content with the view from the (paid) tower, it is a just a few steps to reach the open air viewpoints on Bradlo hill. For those wanting a short stroll (before perhaps enjoying some lunch in the excellent restaurant attached to the mountain hotel next to the viewing tower) there is a nice 2 km circular route which passes over the the viewpoints and returns via a cycle path. If wanting a longer walk, this is good starting point for approaching the well known Betonová hranice WWII fortification trail.
