A 7km walk in the nature park of Škvorecká obora from Úvaly

  • The town of Úvaly lies 20km to the east of Prague, on the edge of Klánovice les, the largest forest area in the Prague environs. Úvaly has a historical record back to the 13th century, but settlements have existed here for at least seven thousand years, when the first Neolithic farmers arrived in the region.
  • Úvaly has fast train connections to Prague center and is a good location for a number of easy walks in the forest and farming terrain to the east of Prague. These may be taken as standalone (short) walks or combined together to make a full day trip. The first option is to head westwards to explore the many (mostly flat) trails amongst the oaks trees of Klánovice forest. A second alternative – detailed on the linked page – follows the educational trail for 5 km which starts in the town center and visits a new lookout tower in the hills to the east of the town.
  • The third option for a short walk, outlined on this page, explores an attractive park area to the west of town, the Škvorecká obora – Králičina. This nature area adjoins Klánovice les, but has a slightly different (and more varied) character to the main Klánovice forest area, due to the terrain created by the Výmola stream. There is also an educational trail around part of the reserve – the Včelí stezka Úvaly – which includes information about local bee keeping practices as well as the nature area generally. The trail also passes the remains of an old castle – Skara – which is so far undated.
  • The directions set out below start from Úvaly train station, but for drivers there are various parking options around town, including next to the station and along the main street (with a 2 hour limit). The circular route is 6.9 km long with only 50m of height gained/lost, but the initial section above the river is quite narrow and rugged and is unsuitable for strollers.
  • The town center is well endowed with positively reviewed eating establishments for refreshment after (or before) the walk. These include the large well known pub on the main street Hospoda na dobrým místě, the next door Bistro Úvaly (which also has excellent homemade ice cream), the Italian restaurant Positano 2 (on the other side of the main street) and just 500m away the new microbrewery Pivovar Libertas. These establishments have outdoor seating areas.
