A short walk around castle Seeberg/Ostroh near Františkovy Lázně: 3 km (extendable)

  • Seeberg castle is located in the village of Ostroh on a low hill overlooking a bend of Slatinný stream, some 5 km from the spa town of Františkovy Lázně. Dating from the 12th century, Seeberg is one of the oldest and most interesting restored castles in western Bohemia, notable for its blend of Romanesque, Gothic and early Renaissance architecture. The castle houses a museum, run by the town of Františkovy Lázně, which owns the castle.
  • The direct walking route from the center of Františkovy Lázně is just under 6 km along a quiet country lane. There is a slightly longer alternative route, which can be combined with the direct route to create a nicely varied 14 km circular tour on easy paths. This walk has yet to be fully documented in the guide, but the suggested route can be found using this link.
  • For those only having time for a short walk, Ostruh can be reached by bus from Františkovy Lázně or Cheb and there is a free car park next to the castle. There are five marked educational trails in the countryside near Seeberg, which are definitely worth combining with a trip to the castle.
  • The trails have various information boards outlining the history, crafts and natural environment in the area around the castle (Czech and German language). The route shown in the map below combines two of the trails into an easy circuit of just over 3 km. The suggested route is mostly flat and is on country lanes. It should be manageable with a stroller. For refreshments after the walk, the hotel and restaurant Seeberg, located 50m from the car park is worth a visit.
