Walks in the Prague parks (VIII) – the Riegrovy sady (Rieger gardens) in Vinohrady: 2 km
- The Riegrovy sady (Rieger gardens) is a popular urban park located just to the east of Prague’s main station, in the stylish residential district of Vinohrady. The park was created in 1902 and is named after the prominent early Czech nationalist politician, František Ladislav Rieger (1818-1903).
- The park is located on a small hill and offers good views from its grassy slopes – it is renowned for its sunset views (see the linked post from the excellent Prague Views website). In addition to the views, the park has some attractive mature trees and for entertainment there are outside exercise machines and a large children’s playground.
- There are various ways to get to the park by public transport. The closest tram stop (Italská) is just 200m from the southwest corner park entrance (where the huge bronze statue of Rieger is situated). For a more leisurely stroll, catch the metro to Náměstí Míru and walk down one of the attractive Vinohrady streets, lined with cafes and restaurants, to get to the park in around 500m. If passing through Náměstí Míru, stop in the striking neo-Gothic church of St Ludmilla . It is exquisitely decorated.
- Overall, the walk to and around the park should be little more than 2 km in total, with around 50m of height to ascend/descend. For refreshments, at the top of the park there is well-known open-air pub/beer garden (map point 6) and an outdoor cafe in the Mlíkárna pavilion dating from 1830 (map point 4). For something a bit more sophisticated, try the stylish La Boheme Cafe, on Na Švihance street, just off the edge of the park (map point 7).

Directions
- Getting to the park is best achieved with a good street map, or using the mapy.cz phone applaction
- Once at the park navigation around is not challenging. It is worth doing a circle around, from the bottom southwest corner (where the statue is)
