*A 3 km walk in Prague’s botanical gardens and the sv. Klára vineyard*
- Prague’s botanical gardens are located on the slopes above the river Vltava to the north of Prague center in the historic villa and vineyard area of Troja. Covering almost 30ha, a full exploration of these lovely gardens can take a few hours and is a good walk in its own right. The gardens are relatively new and so each year they evolve with new areas added. Highlights include the Japanese garden, the Fata Morgana greenhouse area (especially around May, when one of the greenhouses may be filled with giant tropical butterflies), and the vineyard of svatá Klára (with its superb views of Troja chateau and the Prague skyline).
- The suggested walking route starts at the north entrance of the botanical gardens (this is the highest point) located in the Bohnice district of Prague. There is a reasonably-sized (paid) car park directly by the entrance. The north entrance may also be reached by regular bus from Kobylisy metro station. An alternative is to start at the bottom of the gardens below the sv. Klára vineyard, where there is a separate entrance. This is close to the Prague zoo entrance, if combining both attractions.
- The route shown in the map below explores the main areas in a 3 km tour, returning back to top car park – but does not visit the Fata Morgana greenhouse (this option needs to be added when buying a ticket for the outdoor gardens) and there is a separate entrance to the greenhouse, outside the main garden area.
- The gardens are on a slope – with a height difference from top to bottom of around 80m – but the main paths can be managed with a stroller. For refreshments there are two café areas in the gardens and a wine bar located in a 17th century vineyard house (serving simple snacks as well as glasses of wines from the sv. Klára vineyard – the terrace area at the wine bar has super views).
