A visit to the Pohansko chateau and Slavic archaeological site, near Břeclav – 5 km

  • Pohansko is the most southerly of the monuments, chateaux and follies constructed by the noble Liechtenstein family in the 19th century, which make up the remarkable UNESCO listed Valtice-Lednice Cultural Landscape. The grand hunting chateaux was constructed in the early 19th century in an Empire style. It is located 5 km southeast of Břeclav.
  • The chateau was constructed within the old ramparts of a large and important Slavic settlement, which dates from the 9th century. It is believed that the 55ha site was the seat of the Mojmír dynasty, considered founders of the Great Moravian Empire. Extensive archaeological investigations have revealed both pagan and later Christian shrines at the site. Pohansko chateau houses a museum with archaeological findings from the site. There are reconstructions of a Slavic house and pagan shrine within the area of the old fortification.
  • The chateau and Slavic fortification can be reached by walking 2 km from the closest parking area, along an asphalt road. It is an easy route suitable for strollers. There are various information boards along the route as this is the first part of the Pohansko educational trail. Some of the boards, and the reconstructed Slavic house and shrine are located in the grassy central section. There are also two WWII concrete bunkers along the route that are accessible. The chateau has a café-restaurant for refreshments.
