*An easy, nicely varied walk from historic Planá to the Chodovar brewery: 6 km to 10 km*

  • Planá is an attractive town in west Bohemia, with a long history dating back to early Slavic times, some 1500 years ago. Planá’s main square is lined with pretty Renaissance and Baroque era buildings and is worth a wander around. There are some good refreshment options on the square.
  • Some 3 km north of the main town, lies the village of Chodová Planá, dominated by buildings related to the Chodovar brewery, the oldest in west Bohemia, dating back at least to the 16th century. The impressive brewery is now family-owned. Brewery tours are available and there is a popular restaurant attached to the brewery, which makes a good target destination for the short, easy walk from Planá town.
  • The suggested trail leading from Planá to the brewery has a surprising number of things to see along the way. Starting just outside the town center, a historic tree alley leads to the St Anne pilgrimage church dating from the 18th century. Nearby, a pleasant new café serves tasty, filled croissants (map point 4).
  • The trail then passes the Anenský pond (usually occupied by lots of swans) before reaching the outskirts of Chodová Planá, where there is a remarkable old Jewish century, with gravestones dating back to the early 18th century.
  • The route from Planá bus station (located around 500m from the main square) to the brewery at Chodová Planá is just under 6 km long and is reasonably flat on good footpaths. There are, however, a couple of sections in the forest that are not ideal for strollers. The return journey to Planá town can be made by bus or by taking a more direct trail (as shown in the map below) resulting in a 10 km round trip, with around 100m of height to ascend-descend.
  • For refreshments (in addition to the St. Anne café and the Chodovar brewery restaurant) back in Planá try the excellent bakery on the north side of the square (map point 9) or the Rybí restaurace on the south side (map point 10).
