A short visit to Libochovice chateau and its English park – 3km

  • Libochovice chateau is one of Bohemia’s most important early Baroque chateaux. Its position directly on the Ohře river provides a romantic backdrop for an English park that offers visitors to the chateau a peaceful walk amongst the many varieties of trees. The park (which is free to enter and normally open March to December) also has an ornamental French garden, which make a nice contrast to the parkland by the river.
  • A tour of the interior of the chateau is also recommended, offering a variety of differently styled rooms, from from Renaissance through to 19th century. Libochovice was the birthplace of the famous 19th century Czech scientist Jan Evangelista Purkyně and there is an exhibition devoted to his life and work inside the chateau.
  • The short (flat) walk in the park – which is no more than 2 to 3 km – can be combined with a longer walk in the immediate area, with views towards the spectacular volcanic hills of the České středohoří nature zone. There are a number of excellent short walks that start or finish in the town of Libochovice. The walk along the Ohře from Budyně to Libochovice and the trail to Hazmburk castle are particularly recommended.
  • There are various refreshment options in Libochovice, with several restaurants on the main street. However, try the newly opened Italian style  Café Della Porta, which serves excellent coffee and homemade cakes (located just next to entrance to the chateau). The name is taken from the 17th century Italian architect responsible for the Baroque design of chateau.
  • Libochovice is on the regional train line between the main line stations of Louny and Litoměřice. There are also regular bus connections to Louny for the bus station. For drivers there are parking places along the main street.
