A short exploration of Kroměříž, UNESCO World Heritage Site – 7 km

  • The Kroměříž chateau and associated gardens were included in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1998, primarily as due to the rare example of gardens that show the transition from a Renaissance to Baroque style. The unique character of the gardens and park area is due to the use of the chateau by the Bishops of Olomouc as their summer residence in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Baroque chateau was actually constructed on the base of medieval castle – the famous tower is a 17th century addition to an originally medieval construction.
  • A walk around the historic town is definitely worthwhile, with the unique enclosed ‘Flower Garden‘ being a major highlight. The chateau is bordered by a large English style park area, which should also be included in any route exploring the town. There is a small zoo area near the chateau, and manz peacocks are usually wandering around the gardens.
  • A suggested 7 km route starting and finishing at the train station. The paths are all suitable for strollers. There are many refreshment options in Kroměříž. The standout café is the velo café on the main square (velké náměstí) and there is good Italian ice cream at the kiosk halk way down Kovářská pedestrian street.
