A circular tour around Křížový vrch (487 m) starting at Chotěšov Monastery: 15 km

  • The west Bohemian Chotěšov monastery was founded in the early 13th century by the Premonstratensians and became a female convent with sisters moving from the central Bohemian monastery of Doksany. The monastery was burnt down during the Hussite Wars, rebuilt at the end of the 15th century and had an impressive four wing Baroque convent added in the middle of the 18th century, shortly before the abolition of the monasteries by Emperor Joseph II.
  • Today, the monastery is open for tours from April to September and the pleasant grounds are frequently used for municipal events (when the author last visited in early May 2023 there was a wine festival…). The monastery is situated in attractive countryside 15 km southwest of Plzeň and a nice way to explore the area on foot is to make a circular tour from Chotěšov to Křížový vrch hill, which was formerly a pilgrimage site. The 19th centurz church has been partially restored and the viewing tower is now open, offering a good panorama of the west Bohemian countryside.
