*The Baroque Křížová cesta in the south Bohemian pilgrimage town of Římov: 5 km*

  • Římov is an important Baroque pilgrimage site 14 kilometers south of České Budějovice. The site was founded by the Jesuits of Český Krumlov, who acquired Římov from the Eggenberg family in 1626. At the centre of the village is the Loreto chapel and cloister, which is filled with Baroque and Rococo murals.
  • North and east of the town is the remarkable 4.5 km “Way of the Cross” pilgrimage trail, lined with 25 Baroque chapels (most of which have been restored). It is a unique site, probably the only one of its kind in Central Europe.
  • The trail is easy to follow, mostly on footpaths through the meadows, with a couple of smaller hills. There is around 90m of height to ascend/descend. For refreshment, there are a couple of pubs in Římov village. A small hut immediately outside the chapel is seasonally open, selling souvenirs and homemade snacks.

Directions

  • Římov can be reached by bus from České Budějovice. There is no designated public parking area, but there are usually places to be found in the side streets
  • The Křížová cesta follows the GREEN hiking trail in a clockwise direction – first heading towards the Na křížové cestě junction (from the center of the village head down K Loučení street)
  • After 4 km the route returns back to the village and reaches the Pod Kostelem junction. Here the trail splits: the final section continues on for 200m to reach the 25th chapel. The turn to the right leads back to the village center and the Loreto chapel
