An easy 14 km circuit tour in the Křivoklátsko hills, starting at the Matuška brewery shop in Broumy

  • The Křivoklátsko protected landscape area (PLA) is a large, mostly forested, upland area to the west of Prague. The mixed forests and rocky ridges in the nature zone offer a wide range of delightful walks on a large number of mostly easy trails. Probably the best time for a visit is the autumn, when the trees turn a variety of colors. The broad mix of trees in the managed forests (oak, beech, silver birch, linden, larch, spruce and pine) combine to create this magnificent tapestry.
  • Křivoklátsko also has a number of good pubs for refreshment after a trip but starting a trip in the small village of Broumy (situated around 20 km to the west of Beroun) is unique as it allows a stop at the Matuška brewery shop, either for a tasting or just to buy some of the wide variety of unfiltered beers.
  • A couple of marked hiking trails pass through Broumy and it is possible to create a nice circular route of 14.5 km, mostly in the mixed forest areas. The route also passes some of the ‘bullied’ rock formations that Křivoklátsko is famous for. These rocky ridges were created by metamorphasis (high pressure and/or heat transforming the existing sedimentary rock into a super hard version).
  • The suggested route is mostly on quiet country lanes or forest footpaths. None of the paths are steep or difficult, but there are a few uneven sections which would make the route challenging with a stroller. There is 260m of height to ascend/descend on the route.

Directions

  • Start in the village of Broumy (bus connections with Beroun and a few parking spots near the brewery shop)
  • Join the YELLOW trail head along the road in the direction of the U Háků junction
  • After 850m at the crossroads, the YELLOW trail continues straight on, but here leave the trail and turn left to follow the country lane gently uphill (this is a better option than taking the BLUE trail in forest which runs parallel to the road, as the forest trail is often very muddy and crosses a stream several times before join with the road further up the hill)
  • After walking along the lane for 4.3 km, reach the trail junction of Pod Malým Vlastcem and here turn left onto the GREEN trail heading towards Vlastce
  • After 4.1 km reach the Hřebeny – hájovna junction (close to the rock ridge) and here rejoin the YELLOW trail which heads back to Broumy, reached in 5 km
