A walk around the Jan Žižka memorial in Trocnov (with optional visit to Borovany monastery): 2 km

• The legendary Hussite general Jan Žižka was born around 1360 in his family estate near the current village of Trocnov, around 15 km southeast of České Budějovice in south Bohemia. Little remains of the original buildings, but a short nature trail explores the area and provides information (in Czech and German) about Žižka and the Hussite wars.
• The route passes a monumental statue of Žižka constructed in the 1960’s, ruins of the old courts and an open-air museum (open seasonally) featuring reconstructed 14th century buildings. Note that the visitor center beside the car park – housed in a former granary belonging to the nearby Borovany monastery – is being reconstructed and is only scheduled to reopen in April 2026.
• The 1.5 km trail is partly in attractive woodland passing a couple of ponds and is essentially flat. The paths can get muddy but should be manageable with a stroller. There is a snack bar in the middle of the site, again open seasonally.
• The memorial is most conveniently reached by car (there is parking on site). If travelling by public transport the best option is to catch a train from České Budějovice to the regional station Radostice u Trocnova – it is a 1.3 km walk from there to the memorial, along the RED hiking trail.
• If driving in the area, it is also worth stopping in the nearby town of Borovany to view the Augustinian monastery, which was founded in the 15th century and then converted into a fine Baroque chateau in the 18th century by Prince Johann Nepomuk I. of Schwarzenberg, who used the site as a summer residence. There is a pleasant café in the chateau, which is also worth visiting.
