A short tour around the Hudlická skála rock ridge – 2 km (extendable)

  • If on a tour of the attractive countryside of the central Křivoklátsko area, take a moment to visit the Hudlická rocks, which are a short walk from the village of Hudlice (which is itself just a few km from Beroun). This short rocky ridge, which has a super view from the top (revealing the ridge line which pokes through the trees like a dragon’s back). These are very hard metamorphosed rocks, dating from the ‘old mountain’ period, some 600 million to 1 billion years ago. They are some of the oldest exposed rocks in Bohemia.
  • The rocks are located 700m from the center of Hudlice village on the BLUE trail. After climbing to the top of the rocks – which involves a little scrambling and some steep steps – it is worth circling around the rock outcrop for the views to the south over the meadows (which might be filled with poppies in late June/early July).
  • A visit to Hudlická skála can easily be combined with walks to two other Křivoklátsko highlights – the viewing tower on Krušná hora and the ancient Slavic settlement on Veliz hill – to create a 16 km to 20 km varied hike. See the Krušná hora walk to see how best to combine these three landmarks.

Directions

  • There are buses to Hudlice village from Beroun bus station (get off at Hudlice, horní stop) or if driving in the area, find a parking spot in the village
  • In the center of the village at the trail signpost – where the BLUE and RED hiking trails meet – take the BLUE trail down a side street in the direction of Hudlická skála
  • After 600 m on reaching the trail signpost near the tourist benches, take the blue spot marked diversion trail to the top of the rocks and the excellent views – this is quite a steep, rugged path, with a small scramble on the rocks at the top – only for those with a head for heights
  • Return back down to the trail signpost on the same path. At the benches continue on the BLUE trail towards the meadow in order to do a full circumference of the rock area
  • After 300m the BLUE trail leaves the rock area and crosses the meadow heading gently downhill. Do not follow the BLUE trail at this point but instead take the unmarked footpath that loops around the rocks to rejoin the village street which was used for the outbound route
  • Return back to the village center on the BLUE trail
