From Holoubkov to Rokycany through the beautiful Trhoň nature reserve – a 15 km walk
- The Trhoň nature reserve is a small protected forest and upland area located near Rokycany, just south the D5 highway. Geologically it is an extension of the Brdy highland area, but with somewhat lower peaks, the forests are more mixed and include some picturesque natural beech groves. The reserve is well known to autumn mushroom hunters, but for walkers its quiet paths offer some fine forest and hill landscapes in all seasons.
- This one way walk starts at the main line train station of Holoubkov and finishes at Rokycany station (both stations have frequent direct trains to-from Prague). The route crosses the peak of Trhoň (624 m), descends towards the village of Hůrky before climbing to reach the peak of Žďár (629m), which has excellent views from its rocky summit ridge towards the Křivoklátsko hills.
- The Žďár summit was inhabited nearly 3000 years ago, when a 24ha late Bronze Age fortification was constructed, probably by a tribe of the Knovíz culture . The purpose and duration of the prehistoric site has yet to be determined. The stone ramparts on the south and western flanks are still visible.
- The route then descends towards Rokycany for a total of 14.5 km, with 390m of ascent and 450 m of descent. It is a particularly beautiful walk in autumn when the forest colors are spectacular. None of the paths are particularly steep. There are no refreshment options on the route but there are various options in Rokycany, including the highly regarded restaurant Železná, which is a 200m diversion from the walking route.
