The 120 km Grand Tour: a 4 day hike along the best trails in Český ráj
- This walk provides the ultimate tour of Český ráj. It is a strenuous but rewarding four day continuous walk, with three overnight stops, along nearly 120 km of the best trails in the region. The tour traverses almost every sandstone rock area in the region and all the major castles and chateaux. The chosen route uses segments of the famous ‘Zlatá stezka’ (Golden trail) which is the traditional long distance multi day route through the region. However, the Zlatá stezka misses quite a number of exciting locations, so this tour hopefully provides a more comprehensive itinerary, including some of the best lesser known sights in Český ráj
- The tour can be done in either direction, starting and finishing at two mainline train stations, Turnov and Mnichovo Hradiště, where there are direct and regular trains to/from Prague. The route described below assumes a start in Turnov and a finish in Mnichovo Hradiště, which gives the hardest day on Day 1 (and does mean a very early start is needed if travelling to Turnov that morning). There is also the option of driving to Turnov and leaving the car in the conveniently located large parking at Turnov bus station for the duration of the tour
- Day 1 (or Day 4 if doing the trip in reverse) involves starting and finishing in Turnov, so this provides an option to reduce the trip to three days, by skipping the entire northern section of Český ráj, if needed
Here are the highlights of the four days:
- Day 1 :The walk starts from the main train station at Turnov (to which there are regular direct trains from Prague) . The route traverses four separate sandstone rock areas; the Klokočské skály (with their impressive cliff views) , Besedické (with their intricate maze-like paths) , the spiky Vranov ridge and finally the tranquil Drábovna rocks. The route also visits the romantic medieval rock castle ruins of Rotštejn, Zbiroh, Vranov and Frýdštejn, the town of Malá Skála, the volcanic hill of Sokol and includes a photogenic section along the river Jizera. Day 1 finishes back in the centre of Turnov, where there are various accommodation options (including the Bohemia Inn). This is the hardest day of the four, at 33km long , with approximately 1000m height gained/lost during the trip
- Day 2: This day explores the central area of Český ráj, with most of the time spent exploring the Hrubá Skála rocks, visiting the castles of Valdštejn, Hrubá Skála and the mysterious rock ruins of Kozlov. The route on day 2 passes many Český ráj’s most famous viewpoints, as well as some lesser known lookout places. The day finishes at Hrubá Skála , where there are two accommodation options; hotel Štekl and hotel Zámek Hrubá Skála. Day 2 is the shortest day, at 25 km, with approximately 600m of height gained/lost during the trip
- Day 3: This day follows a section of the classic ‘Golden Trail’ from Hrubá Skála past the lake of Vidlák, the Apolena rocks and on to the iconic castle of Trosky, then diverts for a short exploration of the extraordinary rocks and viewpoints of the Prachovské skály, before returning to spend the night in the historic old town of Sobotka, with its famous examples of folk architecture. The accommodation options in Sobotka include the attractive hotel Pošta. Day 3 is 31 km long with approximately 500m of height gained/lost during the trip
- Day 4 : The final day also uses a famous segment of the Golden trail, between the medieval castles of Kost and Valečov. The route passes through the whole length of the Příhrazské rock area, but before reaching Kost, there is an opportunity to see the Humprecht hunting lodge, the heritage village of Vesec and the fascinating Plakánek valley. The walk finishes at the main train station in Mnichovo Hradiště (from which there are direct trains to Prague, or back to Turnov, if there is a car parked there). Day 4 is 28 km long, with approximately 600m of height gained/lost during the day
- Overall, the paths for this walk are on good trails and some minor roads. There are, however, several steep step sections in the rock formations, and some paths can get very muddy and slippery during wet weather
- The route switches frequently between different marked (and occasionally unmarked) trails, so good route finding skills are necessary for this trip
- Refreshments should be available at various restaurants and kiosks throughout the trip, during the main tourist season from spring to autumn, so supplies other than snacks and drinking water generally need not be carried, unless undertaking the tour from November to March
“One of the goals I set myself when creating this guide was to try to combine all my favourite Český ráj trails, viewpoints, castles and sandstone rocks into one coherent multiday walk, with overnight stays in places I would actually enjoy stopping at. This is my attempt to fulfill that goal. There are a few more places I would ideally like to have included – like the views from the Borek rocks and Přivýšina, or the Komarovský and Věžický lakes – but it pretty much covers the rest! I hope someone, some day, gives it a try. You might even see me on the trail.”
