Walks around the Borek rock formations from Rovensko pod Troskami – 3 km to 8 km

  • This walk explores different aspects of the relatively small but interesting Borek rock region. This is a relatively quiet area, with a sandstone plateau that has not yet broken into individual columns. There is a super view of Trosky castle from the plateau.
  • The walk starts in the town of Rovensko pod Troskami, and the rock area is reached within 20minutes. There is then an option to return on the same route back to Rovensko (giving a total walk of 3 to 4km, which is manageable with a baby stroller)
  • The full walk descends the ridge and circles back under the cliffs along an attractive unmarked path past a large deer park. The total walk length is 6 km including the section on the unmarked path. There is 220m of height gained/lost on the route. Refreshments should be available on the town square in Rovensko pod Troskami.

“The Borek rock city is definitely worth visiting for its attractive cliff edge path and easy access from Rovensko pod Troskami. There are interesting options to explore the rocks on quiet paths away from the main trail”

Directions

  • Start and finish the walk at the small parking area in the Rovensko pod Troskami town square (or alternatively take the train to/from the Rovensko station – trains go from Turnov and Hradec Králové)
  • From the town square , follow the BLUE trail for 200m along the mail road and at the signpost turn right off the main road still following the BLUE trail (direction Borek)
  • After 1km of gentle climbing enter the rock area, and continue on the BLUE trail along the cliff edge (good views towards Trosky castle). There are options to explore the rock plateau along short unmarked trails if desired
  • Walkers with baby strollers should turn back before the ridge starts descending and retrace the route back to Rovensko
  • Walkers wanting to complete the circular tour should descend the ridge still following the BLUE trail, joining the main road close to the village of Borek
  • Walk for 300m on the new pavement towards Borek village. The BLUE trail turns left after 250m. Do not continue on the BLUE trail, but instead continue on the pavement a further 50m and then turn to the right on an unmarked track which heads gently uphill just before the last house
  • Follow this track for 700m past the small ponds until reaching the Borecké skály national park sign (pictured below). At this point cross the stone bridge to the other side of the valley and join a small track which heads to left gradually up hill, with the large deer park on the left side
  • After 900m this track rejoins the main BLUE trail at the entrance to the rock area. Turn left onto the BLUE trail and return back to Rovensko pod Troskami on the same path as was taken for the outbound route

[Note: the stone bridge pictured that is used to cross from one side of the valley to the other is not at the time of writing shown on mapy.cz. Accordingly route finding using the mapy.cz gives incorrect distances]
